Russia expanding chemical weapons use in Ukraine, say European spy agencies
Russia has intensified its use of chemical weapons against Ukrainian soldiers in a serious violation of international law, the Dutch and German intelligence agencies have said. On Friday, they said there was extensive evidence that Moscow's forces were using banned products, including the choking agent chloropicrin. Russia denies using the prohibited weapons, as does Ukraine. On Wednesday, Maria Zakharova, the spokesperson for the Russian foreign ministry, claimed that the Federal Security Service found a cache of Ukrainian weapons in the east of the country containing chloropicrin. "It is normalised and widespread. Chloropicrin is dropped by drones to drive soldiers out of trenches, and then kill them," Dutch Defence Minister Ruben Brekelmans said in a post on X. Brekelmans, who is now calling for tougher sanctions against Russia, described the use of chemical weapons as "horrible and unacceptable".

Agile Orchestration at Will: An Entire Smart Service-Based Security Architecture Towards 6G
Duan, Zhuoran, Nan, Guoshun, Li, Rushan, Wang, Zijun, Xiong, Lihua, Yuan, Chaoying, Liu, Guorong, Xu, Hui, Cui, Qimei, Tao, Xiaofeng, Quek, Tony Q. S.
The upcoming 6G will fundamentally reshape mobile networks beyond communications, unlocking a multitude of applications that were once considered unimaginable. Meanwhile, security and resilience are especially highlighted in the 6G design principles. However, safeguarding 6G networks will be quite challenging due to various known and unknown threats from highly heterogeneous networks and diversified security requirements of distinct use cases, calling for a comprehensive re-design of security architecture. This motivates us to propose ES3A (Entire Smart Service-based Security Architecture), a novel security architecture for 6G networks. Specifically, we first discuss six high-level principles of our ES3A that include hierarchy, flexibility, scalability, resilience, endogeny, and trust and privacy. With these goals in mind, we then introduce three guidelines from a deployment perspective, envisioning our ES3A that offers service-based security, end-to-end protection, and smart security automation for 6G networks. Our architecture consists of three layers and three domains. It relies on a two-stage orchestration mechanism to tailor smart security strategies for customized protection in high-dynamic 6G networks, thereby addressing the aforementioned challenges. Finally, we prototype the proposed ES3A on a real-world radio system based on Software-Defined Radio (SDR). Experiments show the effectiveness of our ES3A. We also provide a case to show the superiority of our architecture.
How will Ukraine's attack on Russian bombers affect the war?
Kyiv, Ukraine – Any description of Ukraine's attacks on Russia's fleet of strategic bombers could leave one scrambling for superlatives. Forty-one planes – including supersonic Tu-22M long-range bombers, Tu-95 flying fortresses and A-50 early warning warplanes – were hit and damaged on Sunday on four airfields, including ones in the Arctic and Siberia, Ukrainian authorities and intelligence said. Moscow did not comment on the damage to the planes but confirmed that the airfields were hit by "Ukrainian terrorist attacks". Videos posted by the Ukrainian Security Service (SBU), which planned and carried out the operation, which was called The Spiderweb, showed only a handful of planes being hit. The strategic bombers have been used to launch ballistic and cruise missiles from Russian airspace to hit targets across Ukraine, causing wide scale damage and casualties.

Ukraine drone strikes hit nuclear bombers deep inside Russia
Ukraine staged a dramatic series of strikes across Russia, deploying drones hidden in trucks deep inside the country to hit strategic airfields as far away as eastern Siberia. Around the same time, Moscow launched one of its longest drone and missile attacks against Kyiv, escalating tensions ahead of crucial peace talks this week. More than 40 Russian aircraft, including the Tu-95 and Tu-22 M3 long-range bombers capable of deploying conventional and nuclear weapons as well as the A-50, are reported to have been damaged in the operation on Sunday, an official in Ukraine's Security Service said on condition of anonymity as the details are not public. Ukraine's Security Service chief Vasyl Malyuk led the operation and losses are assessed to be at least 2 billion, the person said.

Russia-Ukraine war: List of key events – day 1,090
Ukraine's military said Russia launched a barrage of 147 attack drones against Ukraine overnight. Out of this, the Ukrainian Air Force reported shooting down 83, while 59 did not reach their targets. Several storage facilities and private residences were reported damaged. The Caspian Pipeline Consortium said that Ukrainian drones hit one of its major oil pipelines in southern Russia's Kropotkinskaya pumping station in the Krasnodar region, affecting supply from neighbouring Kazakhstan. Ukraine's Security Service claimed responsibility for the attack on the oil pipeline and said that Moscow's Ilsky oil refinery in Krasnodar was also hit, with at least 20 explosions heard in the area.

AI poses national security threat, warns terror watchdog
The creators of artificial intelligence need to abandon their "tech utopian" mindset, according to the terror watchdog, amid fears that the new technology could be used to groom vulnerable individuals. Jonathan Hall KC, whose role is to review the adequacy of terrorism legislation, said the national security threat from AI was becoming ever more apparent and the technology needed to be designed with the intentions of terrorists firmly in mind. He said too much AI development focused on the potential positives of the technology while neglecting to consider how terrorists might use it to carry out attacks. "They need to have some horrible little 15-year-old neo-Nazi in the room with them, working out what they might do. You've got to hardwire the defences against what you know people will do with it," said Hall.

Ukraine using artificial intelligence to catch people sabotaging war effort
Artificial intelligence has become one of Ukraine's most "effective tools" in identifying potential saboteurs amid the ongoing war with Russia, according to the Ukrainian Ministry of Internal Affairs. The ministry issued a report Wednesday on law enforcement's anti-sabotage activities aimed at stopping people in Ukraine who may compromise the counteroffensive or aid Russia in its assault. Officers have been using software on tablets to check if a person they view as "suspicious" is already listed in databases, including a police database of about 2 million people suspected of holding positions in paramilitary units from the far-right faction known as the Liberal Democratic Party of Russia (LDPR). The first days of Russia's attack on Ukraine were peppered with reports of mass anti-war protests in Russian cities and thousands of arrests, but the report highlights Ukraine's own efforts to combat acts of sabotage within its own population. The ministry said that Ukrainian police have been fighting against such saboteurs ever since Russia invaded Ukraine.
